Out 'N' About - Holidays and Breaks for Disabled People

Short Term Breaks

Many people find that the term ‘respite’ suggests ‘escape from something disagreeable or causing a burden’. Many people now refer to this type of break as ‘short term breaks’ as this has no bias and implies that there is a benefit to both the carer and the person being cared for. When looking at these sort of breaks it is a good idea to check what the places have to offer and if this meets your needs.

We all need to take some time out for ourselves but it can often be very hard to do so. In certain circumstances, for instance if you are a carer, help can be arranged to look after the person that you are caring for. This can be mutually beneficial for both the carer and the cared for, benefiting the relationship and giving each other some space.

“I get a short-term break each year. It’s so I can get away from mum and she can have a break from me. It’s so we don’t end up pulling our hair out.”
Sometimes people have feelings of guilt leaving loved ones so that they can take some time for themselves but in many cases it is necessary for the health of the carer and helps that person carry on caring.
